The Odd One. By Emily

THE ODD ONE
Now, we all know the classic story of the Ugly Duckling but what if… we gave that story a little twist

Deep Dark clouds rolled over the country, ears splitting thunder bellowed in its wake. But there in the centre of it all perched on a hill was the nest of a fine swan with 5 glorious eggs balancing nimbly on top, well that was until… A deep long powerful gust of wind hit, pushing one single egg down the precipitous hill.
At the bottom of this treacherous hill was a nest belonging to a crocodile who was a three time Olympic champion swimmer. She had retired and settled down; she herself had 3 gigantic eggs and was just about to bury them in the soft ground next to the neighbouring lake suddenly the poor croc egg rolled right into the nest just as the first load of dirt tumbled down upon the delicate egg.

10 TEN YEARS LATER
‘Ha, Ha slimy little Gizzard Ha, Ha squabbling little fish!’ sneered a young  croc and his siblings followed the heartless tune ‘Ha , Ha …’ ‘PETER, METER, CETER AND TOMMY ,come inside for dinner you silly crocs’ bellowed Mrs croc ‘and err.. Ahem Tommy, um I need to talk to you… now please?’ Tommy, the poor little swan raised in a crocodile environment knew this talk was very important ‘Yes mum, anyway I wanna ask you something, Mum, why am I…am I different? Because I look nothing like you, I mean I’m not vicious or strong and I don’t have ferocious jaws but, but just look at me ma I’m not…’ ‘Calm down’ sighed the poor croc mother ‘the reason you’re different is…You’re not mine’ ‘WHAT!!!!!! WHOSE AM I THEN! Why didn’t you tell me, all the sickly slimy fish for dinner drove me mad but I put up with it ‘cause I wanted to fit in and now you tell me that! OMG, OMG!’ And with that he stormed furiously out of the room slamming the door behind him.

He sat outside leaning against a tree next to the lake watching the world go by; he really did wonder whose he was. Then one of his closest crocodile friends Ceter appeared ‘Mum told me everything so you don’t need to explain, Mum also told me your real mum’s arriving tomorrow to pick you up … Good luck’ Tommy gave a miserable sigh as Ceter scurried away, he had decided to run away. Nobody wanted him and his real mother must be horrid if she only realised he was gone after 10 years! So putting those facts together he firmly decided to leave, runaway and find someone who cared. So he got up and began a steady jog to freedom witch soon turned into a quick sprint.

1 HOUR LATER
Plans had not turned out how he wanted, as he was now lost, hungry, tired, bored, sore, bruised, cold, and numb and so, so lonely he was now crying so intensely that he might say himself like Niagara Falls! All hope of love had vanished, so far he’d asked a cat, a beaver, a snake [bad mistake!!] And a hedgehog if they would take him in but every single one had replied the same answer, ‘NO!’ But just as he was crying an elegant swan with 4 babies following closely behind strutted up to him and with a  syrupy voice she spoke to him ‘Excuse me young sir do you happen to know where Mrs.Crocs Mud house is? Tommy gave a deep sigh ‘yes I do but there’s a slight problem you see I would like to help you but I’ve just run away from there, my names Tommy.’ As he held out a limp wing he realised the youngsters behind her had the same limp wings and pale beaks as him! The swan followed his stare and spoke ‘oh dear that’s a shame because I lost an egg a long time ago Mrs.Croc found it so I came to pick it up…but I guess I won’t be needing to go anymore…son!’  Tommy gave a delighted grin because things were finally going his way!

And they all lived a classic happily ever after!

KIWI FIGHTS FOR SURVIVAL

KIWI FIGHTS FOR SURVIVAL
Lightning lit up the early Saturday skies casting deep shadows across the woods and beyond. Kewiki, a humble kiwi almost afraid of everything was out looking for food. Why? It was his turn to look for food tonight and he had decided it would easier a task to do in some light.
He sternly concentrated his stare to the ground trying to sniff out a delicious fat slimy words… which he failed, shivering he miserably began the walk home when he smelt it, in between the stale musty smell of Waiuku woods was the sweet delicious smell of a juicy slimy fat slimy worm and wasting no time he disappeared into the woods.
Kewiki raced through the woods heart pounding a million times a minute, hardly controlling his breathing, two words filled his mind ‘juicy worm’  ‘juicy worm’ but suddenly … NO!!!!! He panicked the sweet smell had vanished and worst of all he was lost, lost in this endless forest of tall trees, and then all hope disappeared as an ice cold howl filled the forest with dread.
Kewiki heart skipped a beat he listened contently straining his ears to pick up the slightest sound or movement… nothing, a terrifying silence filled the air .He expected a wolf to jump out any second! That’s when he heard it a fierce growl from one of the bushes. Two bright yellow eyes stared at him. Then it spoke, its voice sounding like a cat being strangled.
Run! Little kiwi I LIKE a nice chase from my supper!
Kewiki was frozen with fear, a panicking feeling of anxiety rushed over him. He looked around for an escape route. He suddenly skidded to the right he then slid past the wolf and ran for his life. Skidding to the left he could feel the wolf’s hot stale breath and its snapping jaws inches away from his skinny neck. He dived into a deep bush landing in sticky, slimy puddle of mud; meanwhile the wolf was coming…
The furious beast skidded to a sudden stop, “Come out come out!” the wolf declared “Come out come out where ever you are!” It strode pass Kewiki’s bush sniffing the air, but all the wolf could smellwas the disgusting scent of mud. Frustrated, it swung round and strode away. Kewiki climbed out of the bush when the wolf jumped out yet again “Got you now you little twit! There’s no escape now!!’ it hissed, but all of a sudden there was a little voice “Loads, Aim, Fire!!!” Worms shot out of the trees, so did rocks and twigs, pelting the wolf and sending him slinking back into the forest. “The Kiwi Brigade!” Kewiki laughed grinning wildly. Chalk, Kewikis best friend came out from behind a young tree ‘Hey Tewiki Dows it going?’ There was no reply as Kewiki had fallen on the ground laughing.
Kewiki was escorted home safely by the kiwi brigade. That night he snuggled up in his bed, his duties taken other by the adults. He smiled pleasantly and vowled never to go into the woods alone again.

Wheels Day

On Thursday the 6th of September Waiuku Primary’s Syndicate Three had a wheels day; almost every child in Syndicate Three participated in this event.

The teachers of Syndicate Three had a sequenced timetable, first of which they split the children into groups; three groups for bikes because 60 children came on bikes, one group for scooters and another group for children who came with skateboards.

The skateboarders set off to the skateboard park then the bikers departed from the kids with scooters and headed for the field.

The first activity the bikers did… well it depends which group as for there were three groups each doing a range of activities

The first group of bikers had to ride in a certain shape or form of the teacher’s choice.

The second group practiced their steering by swerving around cones and at the same time racing with their opponent.

The last group had a relay race where the children practiced how to park properly.

Eventually the children reluctantly biked up the hill. This event had a great outcome to the K4S topic participating and contributing.

ANZAC Landing

Many soldiers died on the 25th of April at z beach in Gallipoli which was renamed Anzac cove.

On the 25th of April 1915 at 4.15am in Gallipoli many soldiers from New Zealand and Australia travelled on boats in an attempt to ambush the Ottoman Army. But as the moon dipped into the dark sky somehow the Ottoman Army that our soldiers were coming.

We may have lost 11,000 men in that battle but we won the war.

Anzac stands for Australia New Zealand Army Corps.

On Anzac day we remember those who died and remember they did it for our country and freedom .We wear poppies because they battled in a place called Flanders field which was full of poppies so wear your poppies and remember all those extremely brave, proud men who faught for our freedom
